New Berylls whitepaper examines the potential of open source automotive middleware

A new whitepaper from Berylls by AlixPartners examines the potential cost, time, and strategic benefits of open source middleware for the automotive industry. Eclipse S-CORE features prominently throughout the paper as a concrete example of an emerging open source middleware initiative.

Titled Efficiency Gains from Open-Source Middleware Adaptation, the whitepaper evaluates four hypotheses relating to:

  • total lifecycle costs
  • development and adaptation time
  • product-lifecycle stability, and
  • overall risk.

Its analysis considers three different OEM and supplier archetypes.

The paper argues that open source middleware has moved beyond the proof-of-concept stage. In its executive summary, it states that Eclipse S-CORE is turning OEM adoption from a hypothetical possibility into a concrete decision to be made within the next 24 to 36 months.

According to the paper, the primary value of open source middleware does not lie simply in providing software free of charge. Instead, its strategic potential comes from reducing dependency on individual vendors, accelerating standardisation, and allowing companies to redirect engineering resources away from non-differentiating software layers.

The findings vary considerably depending on an organisation’s existing capabilities and position in the automotive value chain. Under the assumptions used in the paper, contributing OEMs could achieve lifecycle effort savings of up to 20 to 40% through shared development and a significant reduction in per-vehicle licence fees. Even greater savings could be possible when an existing solution can be adopted without contributing to its development.

The potential time savings are similarly differentiated. OEMs with strong in-house software capabilities are expected to see broadly neutral results because their existing development processes are already relatively fast. Legacy OEMs undergoing an SDV transformation and technology laggards could save approximately 10 to 20%, corresponding to between three and ten months.

Eclipse S-CORE as a reference open source middleware project

Eclipse S-CORE serves as an important reference point for this analysis. The paper uses the project’s communicated development timeline of 24 months to model how joint development can compare with proprietary in-house approaches. It notes that multiple contributors can develop components in parallel and reuse existing modules, although the authors also acknowledge that current open source data, including data from Eclipse S-CORE, does not yet fully reflect their assumption of five parties contributing roughly equal shares.

The whitepaper also refers to Eclipse S-CORE when discussing functional safety. It notes that the project addresses related risks, among other measures, by building on the pre-qualified QNX OS for Safety microkernel, SDP 8.0. At the same time, the authors stress that responsibility for the safety case and type approval remains with the OEM, regardless of whether the underlying middleware is proprietary or open source.

Stability depends on open source governance and community

More broadly, the paper concludes that open source middleware can match the stability of proprietary solutions once the necessary safety case has been established and sufficient testing has taken place across multiple OEM applications. Overall lifecycle risk is assessed as no greater than that of proprietary in-house development, although the nature of that risk changes: dependency on an individual supplier is replaced by greater reliance on community governance, participating integrators, and a sustainable contributor base:

“A strict governance model with clear approval and change processes is required to coordinate a broad contributor community: formal review paths, explicit ownership, and consistent acceptance criteria for interface changes. Maintainer responsibility must be assigned to dedicated, recognized teams who carry decision authority over the affected interfaces.” (p. 13)

Active and early participation is therefore central to the whitepaper’s conclusions. Cost and time savings depend on contributors aligning their architectures and sharing development work, while early involvement gives organisations an opportunity to shape interfaces, requirements and governance. According to Berylls, the window for exerting this architectural influence is measured in months rather than years.
