Eclipse SDV has been featured in WELT, one of Germany’s major news publications, in an article exploring how open source collaboration is helping the automotive industry address the growing complexity of software-defined vehicles.

The article, “Software Defined Vehicle”, examines why automotive manufacturers and suppliers are increasingly collaborating on foundational software rather than developing the same underlying technologies independently.

Ansgar Lindwedel of the Eclipse Foundation provides insight into this changing approach and the role of Eclipse SDV. He explains how technologies such as middleware provide an essential layer between vehicle hardware and applications, while offering relatively little scope for differentiation between manufacturers.

This creates an opportunity for the automotive industry to develop common foundations collaboratively and concentrate individual engineering resources on the software and functions that distinguish their vehicles.

The WELT article also highlights Eclipse S-CORE, an Eclipse SDV project developing an open source core stack for software-defined vehicles. Rather than stopping at common specifications, participating organisations collaborate directly on software – sharing the development and long-term maintenance of technology that can form part of the foundation for future vehicle platforms.

The article places this collaboration within a broader transformation of vehicle architecture. As vehicles move towards centralised computing and software platforms that can span models and generations, software reuse, interoperability, and the ability to maintain software over long automotive product life cycles are becoming increasingly important.

The feature in WELT brings Eclipse SDV’s approach to a broader audience: collaborate on the foundational technology, while leaving room for manufacturers to differentiate through the functions and experiences they build on top of it.
